So, if the name wasn’t obvious enough, St. Patty’s Day is in honor of the death of Saint Patrick (c. 385 - c. 461) who was the patron saint of Ireland, marking the arrival of Christianity to the country. Due to this, the day celebrates Irish heritage and culture, which is why people tend to get decked out in shamrock green. In addition, alcohol has a special tie to the holiday because as St. Patty’s Day traditionally falls during Lent (when Catholics would typically have alcohol and dietary restrictions), this St. Patty’s Day acted as the exception and allowed individuals to enjoy a drink (or three). Today, this holiday is celebrated through bar hopping, enjoying drinks with friends, and rocking something green. While we don’t expect everyone to go at it like college students, we do think the centuries-long tradition can be honored in our own ways.
This St. Patrick’s Day, we encourage you to get your drink of choice (could be wine or a La Croix) and wear a gorgeous green dress. If you don’t have one (or are curious anyways) we’ve compiled our favorite green maxi dresses; read on to get in the St. Patty’s spirit.
